Using a highly experimental lineup that included 13 players and many first-time doubles partners or first time singles players, the Lady Raven tennis team finished in a tie for first at a quad at CBAC.
Piper Privat made a return to singles, where she excelled as a freshman, and defeated her opponent from Mill Valley, who was the 11th place finisher at Sunflower League. Then she teamed up with Elizabeth Jones to record a victory over Olathe East’s #2 doubles team in a tough 8-6 match.
Jones also teamed with normal singles player Ella Novion to defeat Mill Valley’s #1 doubles team, who finished 9th place at sunflower league, by the score of 8-1.
Carlie Scheer made her return to singles, which she also primarily played as a freshman, losing a tiebreaker match to a Mill Valley player who was the runner up at JV League this year. Scheer then returned to her comfort zone, teaming up with Jocelyn Mattingly to defeat Gardner-Edgerton’s #1 pair by a score of 8-1.
Camryn Medina won her two matches, coming back from a 1-5 deficit to tie her first match at 5-all before her opponent retired with an apparent injury, and then closing out the night with a solid 8-2 win over Gardner Edgerton.
Jenna Nichols also had a solid night, winning 8-1 at #3 singles versus Mill Valley, before teaming up with Maddie Andreasen for an 8-2 win at #2 doubles versus Gardner-Edgerton.
Senior Ava Clayton teamed with Andreasen in a tough 8-2 loss to Olathe East’s #2 team. But she ended her career on a high note, combining with Leah Coker, to win 8-4 over Gardner-Edgerton’s #3 duo.
Sophomore Heidi Mattingly played WAY up on the ladder, teaming with sister Jocelyn in a tough tiebreaker loss to Mill Valley’s #2 doubles team, rebounding with Ella Wiley for a solid 8-2 win over Olathe East’s #3 pair, and then ending her night with a tough 8-6 loss to Gardner’s #3 singles player.
Wiley also paired with Leah Coker (in her first doubles match of the year) for an 8-3 win over Mill Valley’s #3 doubles pair. In between her doubles wins, Coker lost a tough 8-5 match to Olathe East’s #2 singles player, who was the 14th place finisher at Sunflower League.
Junior Anna Cipra also made her varsity debut, losing a couple of tough singles matches to solid players from Olathe East and Gardner-Edgerton.
On a night when so many players were playing in unfamiliar spots or with unfamiliar partners, and finding out about these lineups as the evening went on, the ladies responded with tremendous resilience. We’re so proud of how they competed and are looking forward to post-season play, and seasons to come.
